Well, fellow lemmings, why keep running? We are like the proverbial lemmings, running off the cliff. Even when we see the death toll mounting, as it is, we keep running.
The planet is burning, and we run headlong into the flames. Those at the back are shouting ‘Faster, Faster! It’s the only way to save yourselves!’
And if anyone dares to say stop, trample them underfoot. Faster, faster!
Because ‘everybody says so’. And of course, ‘it’s science’.
Neither of those things are true.
Faced with a planetary crisis, in which climate change is just a symptom, not the underlying cause, everybody panics: rich and poor alike.
In a culture of egoism, individualism, selfishness and a ruthless struggle for survival , the most selfish and ruthless will aim to save themselves first. They will use every possible means to try to control the situation.
In fact, in their eyes, the more horrific the means, the more effective. It’s ‘shock and awe’. It makes them seem all-powerful and unstoppable.
‘Project Fear’.
Project Fear was the name of the campaign against Scottish Independence in 2014. It was designed to attack Scots’ self-confidence. It was of course a projection of the Unionists’ own fear of loss of control.
The world’s plutocrats – I can hardly call such a gang of criminals an ‘elite’ – are desperately afraid of losing their wealth and power, and they project this fear onto others. It is the root of the bullying, corporate culture that seems to now dominate every aspect of society. And the message is always, obey us in every respect – or else they will destroy everyone and everything, (even themselves!) just because they can.
It’s really a form of terrorism. They no longer even hold out the old consumerist, ‘aspirational’ promise of ‘jam tomorrow’. There is now no jam at all – just a desperate struggle for mere survival.
For the 1%, sharing is impossible. They are completely addicted to and obsessed with absolute possession and control. Since absolute power is necessary to them, it must be best for us also. We don’t get to disagree. Faster, faster, over the cliff you go: there are too many of you, you are no longer needed as ‘resources’ for profit, so you are just a cost to us, ‘competition’ to be eliminated.
The world is ‘overpopulated’ because there are too many poor people, too many refugees, too many people who will not do as they are told and compete for resources that they want. So faster, faster, over the cliff with you.
They forget that they and the rest if humanity are not separate. And that humanity is not separate from the ecosystem it is part of. Their dreams of being ‘saved’ through trans-humanism, or moving to Mars, or some other ludicrous nonsense are fantasy. Those whom the gods would destroy, the first make mad.
The world’s richest and most powerful are not the ‘fittest’ to survive. As I have pointed out in previous posts, their philosophy is self-defeating because they are driven by their own fear to fight everyone and destroy eventually even themselves. They cannot help but run over the cliff with everyone else because the ground itself gives way. If you destroy your life support system, you’re dead. Forget space: there is no new frontier to conquer and exploit.
Their only real weapon is fear. And the only shield against fear is non-fear. The only weapon against lies and manipulation is the truth. The only way to stop bullying is to stand up to it. Truth exists. And it may not be what the wealthy and powerful like to hear. All the more reason for asserting it.
The future cannot be ‘reset’ or dictated, and it does not belong only to the wealthiest. Running over a cliff like lemmings is a disaster even for them.
The fittest to survive are those that co-operate and share, for the benefit of the whole system. We cannot save the planet by destroying it and we cannot ‘reset’ it like a computer. Technology’s only real value is to support and enhance the whole life support ecosystem. If it doesn’t pass that test, scrap it. Biology will ultimately control technology, regardless of the so-called ‘4th Industrial Revolution’.
People and nature are one. If we rush over the cliff, and cause it to collapse by doing so, we may inflict massive damage on the ecosystem, but there will still be life on Earth, even if only microscopic, thankful that this evolutionary error is over. Humans didn’t evolve to become a cancer in the body of Gaia. Like all species, we evolved to fill a particular niche. All our cleverness is derived from nature, it arose to enhance the whole not destroy it.
It’s time to grow up and stop behaving like toddlers. To put away our childish fear and start taking responsibility.
That’s why we urgently need to stop, turn around and say to those at the back, you jump off the cliff if you insist, but we are staying right here. In fact, we are already planting gardens and welcoming the bees back.
It’s what I’m doing anyway. Until a better idea comes along, of course.
